Antioxidants protect us from oxidative stress or sometimes called “free radical damage.” Oxidative stress can damage our tissues, or cells and even our DNA. Remember what that rust damage looks like on your car if you don’t protect it? Oxidative stress can accelerate aging and as we age we become less able to combat oxidative stress.
Our bodies do produce come enzymes that naturally beutralize these “free radicals.” The vitamins and other phytonutrients that are in some of our foods were provided by nature to neutralize these damaging agents. Just a few of these high nutrient foods are citrus fruits, Kiwi, broccoli, parsley, black currants, guava, green pepper and many many more.
So how are you protecting yourself from “rusting” and premature aging? You can do things like limiting your exposure to oxidative stress by not smoking, avoiding stress, drinking alcohol in moderation, and avoiding polluted air. You could also fight oxidative stress by consuming more antioxidants in your diet. Most people eat far too few antioxidant-rich fruits and vegetables. In addition, cultivation, storage, cooking and processing often destroys the nutrients in the ones we do eat.
In any antioxidants are harmful, it is the synthetic ones. The best antioxidants we can get are from our food. Unfortunately, because of things like off-season fruits and veggies being difficult to find or very expensive, this is not always possible. In addition, most fruits and vegetables lose most of their antioxidant properties within 24-48 hours from removal from the vine. How long have those grocery store products been off the vine? Pesticides also significantly reduce the antioxidant value of produce so organic is usually better….but expensive.
Supplementation then often becomes necessary. Antioxidant values for produce and supplements are measured by their ORAC values. That stands for Oxygen Radical Absorbance Capacity and is recognized by the US Govrnment studies.
