Do you want to lose that middle bulge but just can’t seem to get it off? Because the stomach is designed to store fat efficiently, stomach weight loss can be difficult for most people. Aging also seems to add to that phenomenon. Too much fat on your arms and legs are easier to start toning so they will become more firm but stomach fat seems more difficult for many to get rid of.
I have read lots and lots of different opinions on the subject (believe me when I say hours) and I can only express what I have found working best for me. Personally I must absolutely do at least 30 minutes of cardio a day. My husband and I also work out with free or resistance weights as well either at the gym or at home (we have the equipment) but without the walking, runing, playing tennis, or some type of cardio where we get totally involved and nearly out of breath, the stomach fat still stays there.
Now that was not always true, but as I have aged especially in the last year I noticed the real need for cardio exercise. At the moment we are on vacation in Mazatlan, Mexico, and we have still managed to walk at least an hour every day. (Actually we took one day off each week here.)
There have been trainers that told me I only needed to do weight training and that was enough or others who have said it is all in the diet. Based on my own experience, you need to do three things: eat a good balanced diet with lots of fresh fruits and vegetables (fiber), do some cardio every day, and also do weight or resistance training.
Another issue that I recently heard was that too much stomach toning without the cardio for fat loss with indeed create good abs but they will still be covered with the stomach fat possibly making you look even larger.
Be sure to get out there and start vigorously walking, running, biking, dancing or whatever you think is fun to do. You’re much more likely to keep it up if you’re enjoying yourself and also if you have some variety. Just get the sweat going and your heart pumping.
A couple more things you can easily do to help you along are to walk when you can instead of driving and stand whenever you can instead of sitting. You can even walk around or keep moving while watching TV (which I don’t really recommend but…). While you’re doing any walking or standing, try to get in the habit of contracting your stomach muscles. This keeps your ads taut and without realizing it you will be shaping them. It’s good for your posture as well.
