Vitamins and minerals are the most talked and written about and still often misunderstood. Your supplement intake may be different from that of others as many things affect nutrients levels such as environment, weight, age, work type. Your nutritional needs also vary from time to time in the same person. Even the AMA no longer believes that we can “get all we need from our food.” In table form, you will find the health benefits, risks from deficiencies, and RDI’s for most of the major vitamins and minerals.
You have heard about the emphasis on antioxidants. What do antioxidants do for you and how can you get them? Antioxidants protect cells once they are assembled. Free radicals damage our tissues, cells, and even DNA. Antioxidants, therefore, are nutrients that protect us from the oxidative stress (free radical damage) that increases the natural aging process and cellular damage. the book also explains that the balance of antioxidants is also important.
Phytohormones are those plant hormones required for correct organ-to-organ communication. These hormones are controlled by our endocrine system. Most people today do not consume enough of the important phytohormone-rich fruits and vegetables. Some of the factors that may be influenced by phytohormones are cancers, cardiovascular disease, menopause, PMS, and osteoporosis.
